This paper presents an outline of the physics of phase transitions for materi-als scientists.Recent developments are emphasized.Problems discussed include:(1)Classi-fication schemes for various types of phase transitions;(2)Landau theory of phase transi-tions and its applications;(3)Kinetics of phase transitions;(4)Microscopic theories ofphase transitions.
