Yujinyuan Arrow-Shooting Competition in the Song Dynasty

宋朝汴梁的玉津园，是皇家的游赏之所，也是朝廷的射圃。宋朝经常在这里举行与契丹使者之间的比射活动，称为“宴射”。宴射有相互夸示武力的用意，但大多数情况下成了一种友好比赛，是古代民族国家间以射箭为主项的运动会，其文化意义值得研究。

Yujinyuan （Yujin Garden） in Bianliang （now Kaifeng）, capital of the Song Dynasty, ＂is the place for arrow-shooting as well as the spot for recreation of the royal family. In the Song Dynasty, it is in Yujinyuan that the arrow-shooting competitions are held between the imperial government of the Song Dynasty and the envoys of Khitan （an ancient nationality in China）, thus called as ＂Yanshe＂ （invited arrow-shooting competi tion）. Yanshe is characteristic of showing off armed might. But in most cases, it has e volved into a friendly competition which turns into, to some extent, a sports meeting of taking archery as its main item among the ancient kingdoms, with cultural significance worthy of deep research.
