The Effect of the Missionary Newspapers and Periodicals on the Development of Modern China′s Press Industry

在近代中国,伴随着西方殖民者对华侵略活动的不断扩张,西方传教士也纷纷接踵而来。作为传教手段,从19世纪初到19世纪末,西方传教士在中国先后创办了近二百种中外文报刊,其发行范围扩及全国各省及沿海和内地各主要城市。传教士报刊是近代中国新式报刊的先驱,开中国近代报业之先河,在中国新闻史、报刊史及出版史上占有重要地位。

In modern China, with the ever-increasing expansion of the invasion of the western colonists, missionaries from the western countries came to China one after another. From the beginning of the 19th century to the end of it, missionaries in China had set up about 200 newspapers and periodicals both in Chinese and in other languages, the circulation of which covered both the coastal areas and the inland cities throughout the country. The missionary newspapers and periodicals are the pioneer of the new press in Modern China, initiating the modern China＇s press industry and playing an important role in the histories of journalism, the press, and the printing business.
