Language, Image and Sense in Western and Chinese Literary Theories

在历史悠久的西方文论中,对形象的认识始终停留在形象是理性的附庸上。而语言作为理性的物质形态,或得到完全信任,或被完全否认,语言与表达的矛盾始终处于尖锐的境地。而在中国文论中,由于兴的作用,以象为中介,言与意的矛盾得到了最大限度的解决。

In Western literary theories accumulated through long history, images have been remaining attached to rationality. As the material form of sense, language is either completely trusted or fully denied, the contradiction between language and expression always being sharp. In Chinese literary theory, the contradiction between language and sense is solved to the greatest possible degree due to the role played by xing （association） with images as the medium.
