My Experience of Academic Pursuit

回顾涉足学海数十年,仍深感治学的基础在于占有材料的充分与翔实,其实质是尊重事实、尊重证据的科学态度与科学精神。而平生景仰鲁迅先生的硬骨头精神,也钦仰胡适先生的学问文章,学术研究亦多侧重这两个方面,并努力补正与超越前贤,力争有所创新,如最先提出和论定鲁迅后期并未否定进化论,撰写了海内外第一部评价较为客观公允的长篇《胡适传》,首开鲁迅与胡适的比较研究,等等。自觉“为人诚厚耿直,只认真理,不屑逢迎”,有为真理而学术的志愿;也乐于听取学界朋友的批评与建议,以求排除各种干扰,修正自己难以避免的错失。

Revisiting my scores of years of academic research, I find the most important is the accumulation of abundant materials and the scientific attitude and spirit of respecting facts and evidence. I have long admired Lu Xun＇ s perseverance and Hu Shi＇s academic articles. In my view, in academic research, one should also dwell on those two aspects. I have tried to surpass these masters by means of innovation. For example, I was the first to advance the idea that Lu Xun did not negate the theory of evolution and write a book entitled The Biography of Hu Shi. I also ventured a comparative study between Lu Xun and Hu Shi. Adhering to the principles of ＂being sincere and honest and seeking truth instead of catering to others＂, I am always open to opinions and criticisms so that I can correct my mistakes by eliminating all kinds of hindering elements.
