The author of this article is of the opinion that metaphors are of two categories. The metaphor in a broad sense is everywhere available, which is a cognitive phenomenon to "use one thing to stand for another" and enhances our knowledge of new things. The metaphor in a narrow sense is a figure of speech, which deepens the hearer/reader' s understanding of things and makes discourse more expressive. The paper discusses ways of preserving the fresh expressiveness of English metaphors, tries to explore theirinnate allegorical meanings from the perspective of metaphorical structures and semantic analysis and puts forward corresponding methods of translation to guide the translating activities.
