Objective To explore the role of human papillomavirus type 16(HPV16) E2/E6 oncogene in cervical cancer. Methods This study was a hospital-based case-control study in Tumour Hospital of Shanxi province during 2001 to 2002. Seventy-four women with invasive cancer and controls with hysteromyoma were matched to cases in a 1 : 1 ratio. The presence of HPV16 E2/E6 oncogenes was tested in cervical tissue using PCR. Results The expressions of HPV16 E2/E6 in patients(41.89%, 52.70% )were significantly higher than that in controls( 17.57 %, 21.62 % ), OR were 3. 250 ( 1.471 - 7.178) and 3. 875 ( 1. 824 - 8. 233) ; absence of HPV16 E2 in patients was slightly higher than in controls. Conclusion The infection of HPVs, especially high-risk HPV16 is related to the development of cervical cancer;the absence of HPV16 E2 and the expression of HPV16 E6 is more significant to cervical cancer.
