Seeking and Transcending ——Appreciating the two Protagonists Ayab and Santiago

解读《白鲸》和《老人与海》的两位主人公亚哈与桑提亚哥,两者之间有着极为相似的人格特征:不同的命运抗争者,却演奏出相同的失败英雄的慷慨悲歌,最后都在自然中实现了精神的终极回归。同时,相对亚哈而言,桑提亚哥是一种进步,经历了从自我走向超越自我的旅程反映了美国民族精神的演进。

By appreciating the two protagonists Ayah and Santiago of Moby ·Dick and The Old Man and the Sea, the characteristics of these two figures are extremely similar： both of them are lonely strugglers fighting against destiny ; both of them compose a piece of vehement cantus for the defeated heroes ; finally both of them accomplish the ultimate regression of spirit in nature. Consequently, a further analysis of the two heroes suggests that Santiago is an advance compared with Ayah ; it is a route from self ego to the transcendence of self ego and reflects the proceeding of American national spirit.
