The hollow glass sphere (HGS) low-density drilling fluids, working as continuous medium, performs incompressible properties and thus avoids many deficiencies Of gas drilling fluids. Its density can vary from 0.6 to 1.0 kg/L, which is suitable for wells in low pressure reservoirs and underbalanced wells. Lab tests show that the drilling fluid shows good compatibleness, rheology, filtration, and lubricity, and it is helpful to protect pay zones. In addition, the mud has advantages of reutilization and no-effects on logging over gas mud. Although the glass sphere is more expensive, the mud can save equipment costs because there is pressurizing equipment compared with gas fluids. It is more safe, and thus it will have splendid applied prospects. The physical properties of HGS, its compatibility with different kinds of drilling fluids and the field applications of this kind of low-density drilling fluid are summarized in this paper.
