古代湖南人才稀少的原因非常复杂。一是古代湖南一直远离中国的政治中心,而且不是政治斗争激烈的地区;二是古代湖南不是一个独立的行省,省内也没有始终如一的政治中心;三是古代湖南开放较晚,经济发展比较单一;四是古代湖南是一个“四塞之省”,交通不便;五是古代湖南的文化教育事业相对落后;六是古代湖南人口变动太大、迁徙过多;七是古代湖南存在着风气保守、习俗落后的一面。这些因素,都影响了古代湖南人才的成长和发展。

First, Hunan had been far away from the political centre of China, as well as it wasnt the area with fierce political struggles in ancient times; second, ancient Hunan wasnt an independent province with its own political centre; third, Hunan was opened relatively late, resulting in single - product economy with inconvenient traffics, backward cuhural and educational undertakings, outdated and backward customs, continuous population migrations, etc. All these factors had influenced the growth and development of talents in ancient Hunan.
