General Characteristics of Xunzi Words

《荀子》词汇总量丰富。其中,单音词占优势地位,复音词居次要地位,但复音词所占的比例也已比较大。其复音合成词的结构方式多种多样,有联合式、偏正式、附加式、主谓式、动宾式等,联合式构词法和偏正式构词法是合成词中最主要的构词方式。《荀子》词汇是先秦汉语词汇发展史的一个重要环节,其地位比较重要。

Among the plentiful quantity of Xunzi＇s words, monosyllabic words are primary while polysyllabic words are secondary. Also, for polysyllabic words there is a variety of forming patterns,such as linking modifying, adding, subject-predicate way, verb-object way, etc, with the first two patterns as the most essential ways to compound words. Words from Xunzi hold an important position in the development of pre-Qin Chinese language vocabulary.
