This paper is a study of Melville＇ s first short story, with a view to define the connection between the novelist＇ s two periods of fiction creation and the narrative characteristics of the short story itself. In the light of Bahtin＇ s dialogic theory, the authors attempt an in - depth analysis of the use of irony in Bartleby the Scrivener. Based on the textual analysis, the authors want to elaborate on the further development of Melville＇ s tragic view and how it is reflected in a roundabout manner in the story.
