THE FAILUR OF PURSUIT: A READING OF GEORGE ORWELL'S NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR

乔治·奥威尔的《1984年》是一部结束西方传统乌托邦小说的反乌托邦小说。主人公温斯顿对“真正的人的生活”的追寻与幻灭过程体现出奥威尔对传统乌托邦小说叙事模式的颠覆,籍此可以说《1984年》是反人文主义对人文主义的突破,是反乌托邦对乌托邦的解构。

As a great anti-utopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four is often considered a termination of the traditional utopian novels. With the approach of A. J. Greimas structural system of narratology, it can be concluded that the novel represents the process of Winston Smiths pursuit and his failure, which subverted the literary genre of utopia in its narrative model. This paper probes into the process of the heros failure and reaches its conclusion that the fate of the hero was doomed in the totalitarian society where the true human being could not exit.
