摘要
在所有的社会文化中,人们总想避免直接提到某些概念或事物,出于忌讳或礼貌,用温和悦耳、转弯抹角的词语—委婉语(euphemisms)来表达粗俗逆耳或令人难堪不快的事情。委婉语在形形色色的社交生活中扮演着一个举足轻重的角色,其主要社会交际功能包括回避禁忌语言、替代粗秽语言、避免社会歧视、修饰职业名称、淡化犯罪行为与满足政治需要等。
In all social cultures, people tend to avoid mentioning some concepts or things in a direct way. Better- sounding and indirect words-euphemisms are used instead of unpleasant words. English euphemisms play an important role in all social lives. Its main social communicative functions include avoiding taboo, replacing disgusting words, avoiding discrimination, modifying profession names and crimes, and satisfying political needs.
