This article introduces the theories of human language processing mechanism, including single-mechanism theories and dual-mechanism theories. Their fundamental differences lie whether language is represented and processed by a single mechanism or two mechanisms. Experimental results show dual-mechanism theories have more powerful explanation. Finally, the implications of dual-mechanism theories to vocabulary teaching in ELF are explored.
