The tenet of systemic-functional linguistics is the study of language from the perspective of level, function, context, text/discourse, register, choice, etc. However, "in one way or another semantic studies remain partial and specific, " (Halliday, 1994:xx) This suggests semantics does not exhaust all the resources where meanings come from and that we should bring to the fore the study of Mediated Discourse Analysis (MDA) , particularly the study of Computer Mediated Discourse Analysis (CMDA) in conjunction with multimodality. Taking advantage of a PowerPoint presentation contest sponsored by Renmin University' s Australian Studies Centre as one of the events for its 2005 Australian Culture Festival in Beijing, we analyzed all the 23 PPT presentation texts. What interests us is that PowerPoint presentation has become a standard presentation tool in communication, and is accepted as a new genre. Through our analysis, we have found that natural language is still the chief mode of expressing meaning; the value of PPT presentation lies in its use of images and sound effects which also construe the thematic meaning, we should make a distinction of PPT as a tool, as a text, and as a genre, and, finally, the study of PPT presentation will contribute to the study of socio- semiotics.
