An important academic transformation occurred in contemporary Western historical philosophy in the 1970s. 'Rhetoric (or linguistic) turn' has made historical narrative a new focus of historical philosophy. Hayden White has played a key role in making this transformation possible. His theoretical explorations brought historical narratives to the very center of historical philosophical thinking, from which arose the narrativist philosophy of history. White's theoretical points of view, deduced from his observation of historical texts as narratives, contain stimulating elements as well as obvious limitations and contradictions.
