On Tension of Sentence Structure and Its Application in Translation

语言的张力指的是由语言所直接促发的多重意义、丰富意蕴或特殊涵义对单纯、有限的语言外壳的冲击,是在语法结构功能的基础上所体现出的语法交际功能。选取英汉定语从句、以and连接的并列句、问句以及省略句加以分析比较,说明了张力在翻译中的实际应用与意义。

The paper deals with the linguistic tension and its application in translation from the perspective of the structural function and the communicative function of the grammar. The structural function is static and inflexible ,while the communicative function is dynamic and flexible. The linguistic tension best exhibits itself in the communicative function on the basis of the structural function. Taking attributive clause, coordinate clause ,interrogative sentences and ellipsis sentences as examples ,the author emphasizes that the context and the logic are key factors in activating the tension.
