The rumen epithelium plays an important role in the metabolism of end-products from microbial fermentation consisting of four strata: stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, and stratum corneum. But the effect of the ruminant itself and dietary regimen on rumen epithelial morphology may result in difference in the activity of ruminal epithelial cells. The wtili zation of isolated ruminal epithelial cells make the study of ruminal tissue morphology and metabolism possible.
