Writing back from Jane Eyre, Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys, retells the story of Antionette, Mr. Rochester' s mad wife. The author takes a narrative strategy in double or multivoices, transforming the mute other into a speaking subject. The novel not only resolves the riddle of craziness of the Creole girl from West Indies, but also reflects the crisis of identity of the author as a Creole woman writer. Thus, the novel resists the colonial and patriarchal discourse both in reality and in text world. By this practice of anti-discourse, Rhys attempts to recreate for herself and her Creole compatriots sharing same fate both individual and cultural identities, which were broken at the colonial age.
