Based on the intertextuality theory, this paper makes an analysis of Princess Fiona, heroin of the animated film Shrek, and the female image she stands for. Comparing her with those female images in other classical fairy tales ( including cartoons), it argues that the female image of Fiona has subverted traditional female images, but that the deconstruction is incomplete. It concludes that, as a woman who pursues freedom to love, Princess Fiona still cannot break the magic spell of the male discourse.
