Mabel is an unmarried woman who has long been under the economic and mental oppression. In the face of the bankruptcy of the family business and on the brink of being driven out of home by her brothers, she decides to end her suffering by drowning, and later is saved by Dr. Ferguson. To reveal Mabel＇s oppressed psychological being, D. H. Lawrence gives detailed description of the development of her psyche and mentality along with his depiction of her economic difficulties. This paper attempts to analyze her psychology with the help of Lacanian theory concerning desire, in the hope of demonstrating that her tragedy lies in her suppressed desire.
