Peace and Development──the Two Major Themes of the Contemporary World

鉴于有些学者对“和平与发展是时代主题”的怀疑和争议,我们认为和平与发展既是大战可以避免,各国能够抓住机遇发展、一定程度上已经实现的状态,也是一个和平面临霸权主义威胁,发展受到国际经济旧秩序阻碍的严峻问题,因而是世界各国人民应付出艰辛努力为之不懈奋斗的目标。我们如此全面地看待和平与发展,则不难理解“和平与发展仍是当今时代的主题”。

Despite the fact that some scholars believe it is a controversial issue, the validity of the statement is beyond any doubt that peace and development are still the two major themes of the contemporary world. On the one hand, we firmly believe that peace and development can help countries all over the world avoid the world war, thus they can seize the opportunity to develop themselves, which in fact has been realized to some extent. On the other hand, we are aware of the serious problem that peace is threatened by hegemony and development is hindered by the old international economic order. Therefore, peace and development are still the goal that people throughout the world should make unremitting efforts to attain. As a result, it is not hard for us to understand that peace and development are the themes of our age since we have considered this issue from all perspectives.
