In the novel The Awakening,Adele and Mademoiselle Reisz are two women characters with sharp contrast in personality. To Edna, they are not simply a foil, but muse and mirror, who awaken Edna and accompany her throughout the solitary journey of self-realization. From them, Edna realizes her potential femininity and learns to release her repressed emotional desire. Meanwhile, She begins to construct her selfhood through art. But the self consciousness ofAdele ar J Mademoiselle Reisz is incomplete and self-deceiving. And the "motherhood" represented by Adele makes Edr s awakening doomed to be tragic. And Edna' s return to the sea at the end of the novel reflects Chopin' s utopian olution to the contradiction between feminine existence and self-realization.
