English writer Thomas Hardy ever remarked that the heroine, Tess,is a pure woman, which caused some quarrels about the purity. By analyzing the characteristics of the main characters and the background, this article points out that though Tess is seduced, abandoned, and finally driven to murder for which she is hanged, she remains her most lovable woman character, and she is a pure woman.
