A Comprehensive Observation of Liu Bingzhong's Literary Achievements

元代僧人刘秉忠,既是一位功业卓著的政治家,又是一位诗文词曲兼擅的作家。由于他的文章留存不多,我们无法根据现存作品评价其成就,但诗和词作都有相当数量,可以肯定地说,在元代诗史和词史上,刘秉忠都可称名家,并且具有他自己的个性特色。他的散曲还不具备元散曲的典型风格;但写得也不错,所以赢得后人瞩目。在元好问、耶律楚材之后,郝经、姚燧、卢挚、刘因之前,因为有刘秉忠的创作,北方文坛便不寂寥。

Liu Bingzhong was both an outstanding Buddhist statesman and a veteran, all - sided writer in the Yuan Dynasty. As his articles did not subsist much, we can't evaluate him according to his existing works; however, he still left a considerable quantity of poems and ci - poems for us. Both in the poetic history and in the ci - po- etic history, Liu can be called an expert with originality.He was good at the composition of sanqu (散曲) as well, though not very typical of this literary genre.Since the appearance of those more famous writers such as Yuan Haowen (元好问) and Yelu Chucai (耶律楚材), Liu filled the void left by them before those newcomers as Hao Jing (郝经), Yao Sui (姚燧), Lu Zhi (卢挚) and Liu Yin (刘因) appeared in the northern literary circles.
