In modern Chinese, ＂huitou＂ functions as a temporal adverb in irrealis sentence to indicate the concept of time, and to connect discourses. Originally, it was a phrase which means the action of turning around the head. But now, it has been lexicalized and grammaticalized to a temporal adverb and connective. This paper discusses the process and conditions of the development.
