Betacellulin(BTC) is a member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family, which is high-expressed in pancreas. It is considered that the regenerative effect of BTC on islets/pancreas maybe through the following pathways: strengthening proliferation of islets, pancreas duct cells and/or promoting differentiation of "stem cells" in pancreas duct and islets(or cell from other sources). The studies in diabetic animal models show hyper- glycemia is ameliorated. Some single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP)s within BTC gene were also thought to be related with pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitns in some ethnic groups. All data suggest that BTC maybe play an important role in regulating growth and differentiation of islets.
