As the general pandect of the whole Lao Zi , the first chapter of "Daojing" should be approached from the following three perspectives: textual study of Lao Zi , contextual consideration and overall understanding, if we want to fully understand the implications of the chapter. In this chapter, "Dao" is an in- describable and metaphysical concept; and "You" and "Wu" are respectively Lao Zi's calling of the two eras of the remote savage past and the later material age.
