The postmodern metamorphosis of Southern literature reflects an ideological conflict. In contrast to their upper and middle class literary predecessors, contemporary Southern writers from proletarian families present their version of Southern life through the narration of the historical experience of their class and show disrespect and indifference to the values held sacred by the Southern Renascence, thus subverting the Southern myth.
