This paper, from the perspective on consumption, reads The Rise of Silas Lapham, Sister Carrie, and The Great Gatsby. Chronologically, it expatiates on how consuming cultures bridge the gap between the dynamic social productions and social ideologies in this great transformation. It not only unfolds consumption, the agency of American urbanization so as to transmit the western to the oriental, but also highlights the important role literature has played in documenting historical heritages so as to confirm the necessity of literature.
