On the Blending and Conflicts between Matteo Ricci and Confucianism

利玛窦为了传教,一方面极力地在“天主”、“上帝”与“天”,“人性论”与“仁义道德”诸方面将基督教与儒学进行揉合和会通;另一方面又无法去摸平相互间的冲突。尽管会通和冲突并存,但利氏成功地开创了两种异质文化之间对话的先河。它昭示着我们对待异质文化的最好办法和最有利的态度是“君子和而不同”。

For his mission in China, Matteo Rieei aimed to blend Christianity with Confucianism in some respects such as ＂God and Heaven＂ and ＂Humanity, Virtue and Morality＂. However, he had no good way to settle all the conflicts between Chinese culture and the western culture. Although blending and conflicts remained between the two cultures, Matteo Rieci could finally succeed in making a dialogue between them, which demonstrates to us that the best and most useful way to deal with the differences between two cultures is that ＂harmonious co-existence of different cultures＂.
