Strategies for the Chinese in their English Communication

在经济全球化的今天,众多的跨文化交际都是通过英语来完成的。由于中西方文化之差异,中国人在英语交际中常常犯“文化错误“,导致“文化休克”现象。只有了解并理解中西方文化中的社会规范及其价值观念之差异,明确并掌握汉英不同的语用规则,以及中西方不同的交际风格,保持文化差异意识,才能提高英语交际能力,才能保证跨文化交际顺利进行。

English is of importance in the globalized economy, as all the intercultural communications are conducted in Engfish. As a result of the differences between the Chinese and Western cultures, the Chinese frequently commit ‘cultural errors＇ in their communication in English, which brings about ‘culture shock＇. This paper analyzes and discusses the strategies for the Chinese to have in their English communication by means of social linguistics and intercultural communication. It summarizes that only when they are familiar with the conflicts between Chinese and Western cultures, the difference in pragmatic rules between Chinese and English, and the communicative forms between Chinese and Westerners can Chinese people improve their competence of intercultural communication in English and carry it out suceessfully.
