Objective To explore the DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes caused by exposure to the volatile organic compounds emitted from indoor renovation. Methods The study was included both of animal experiments and epidemiological survey. The DNA damage was studied with single cell gel eleetrophoresis assay in peripheral blood lymphocytes obtained from waitress working over half year in newly renovated workplaees and unrenovated workplaees. The animal experiment was also carried out for investigation of DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes of exposed mice. Results The rate of DNA breaks in peripheral blood lymphocytes of waitress working in newly renovated workplaees was significantly higher than those of the negative control group (P〈0.01). Moreover, the DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes of exposed mice was significantly higher than those of the negative control group (P〈0.01). Conclusion The DNA damage was existed in the peripheral blood lymphocytes of human exposed to the volatile organic compounds emitted from newly renovated areas. The high concentration of volatile organic compounds could cause the DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes of exposed mice.
