Lao She has always been identified as writer of cultural exploration. While it captures some of the features of his books, this definition covers up some of the more important characteristics of his works. Of the 20th century Chinese writers, Lao She is the least political, and this is because he is concerned more with the universal human nature than with particular political ideology.
