Ye Dehui's Communication with Japanese Scholars and His Imagination about Japan

与日本学者的交往是叶德辉学术活动中的重要组成部分。交往对象既有日本老宿之士,也有后学新进;交往内容则包括诗词唱和、古籍交换、经学探讨等。日本学者对中国传统古学的热爱,对叶德辉博学多识的赞赏,使叶德辉引为同道,坚定了传儒宗衍绝学的信念。同时,通过日本学人,他看到了日本对传统文化的重视,产生了“东京物望若神仙”的异邦想像,由此折射出叶德辉个人的文化理想以及近代中日文化交流的多重意蕴。

communication with Japanese scholars,including old and young, made a important part of Ye Dehui＇s academic life. He and his Japanese friends wrote poems to each other, exchanged ancient books between them and discussed Confucian classics. Ye＇s erudition made him famous among Japanese Sinologists. As a cultural conservative, Ye＇s ideas were also affected by Japanese scholars as their love of Chinese classics proved the value of traditional Chinese culture. In Ye＇ s imagination Japan was an ideal country which not ouly could absorb new knowledge but also preserve the old tradition.
