Motor die and mould industry enters rapid growth phase

The automobile die and mould sector,described as"the mother of the automobile industry,"has entered a stage of rapid expansion along with the development of China’s automobile industry. In January this year,Shanghai Automobile Industry Corporation(SAIC)and Sekely,a major U.S. tooling shop,established a US$92 million joint venture,Shanghai Sekely Automobile Modelling Technology Co.,Ltd.In February,a Ningbo automobile lamps plant signed a letter of intent with another U.S. company,Ehlert Tool Co.,on setting up a 10 hectare automobile moulds production base in the Zhejiang city. Data provided by China Die & Mould industry Association show that Guangdong led the field in 2005 in terms of value of die and mould import and export,followed by Jiangsu,Shanghai,Zhejiang,Tianjin,Beijing and Jilin,regions where the automobile industry is developed. In 2004,the association said,China’s die and mould import roseto US$1.8 billion,one third of which was automobile moulds.
