Located on a heavily wooded suburban lot just north of Washington along the Potomac River, the Foster House is composed in the manner of a traditional "railroad" plan farmhouse. The long, wood frame dwelling consists of three attached "little houses" that, in the past, would have been built incrementally as a family grew. This massing accommodates the narrow, sloping site and the client' s request for a two-story house with different, distinct living areas at ground level. The dollhouse, like scale is the result of the purposely overscaled and unadorned windows, dormers and doors.
