科主任是医院为实现其目标、功能，完成其任务而设置的。是医院最基础、最重要的管理者。因此，科主任的工作十分艰巨和复杂，因为科主任不仅是学科带头人，而且是科室的管理者，不断地努力实现科室功能，向社会提供专业服务，保证科室的服务质量，培养专业人才，提高技术水平，促进学科发展，提高学术地位，创造两个效益。为达上述目的：①明确目标；②健全制度；③合理分工；④适当激励；⑤博采众长。而且应有全方位的管理意识：即服务意识、质量意识、整体意识、创新意识、竞争意识、效益意识、民主意识、法律意识。在工作中坚持用好职权原则，并且处理好与院的关系、重点与一般的关系。
