“情”是《牡丹亭》的一个重要主题,是该剧的灵魂。汤显祖将“情”提升到了本体的意义,在该剧中,“情”首先是一种自然意义的情,即情欲,然后才是一种社会意义的情,即情爱,通过对情欲和情爱的肯定,《牡丹亭》实际上也充满着对封建社会的“理”的反抗和对自由和个性的追求。正因为《牡丹亭》中的“情”有着丰富的意蕴,它才能超越以前的言情题材剧作,在戏曲史上划上浓重的一笔。
"Passion" is an important topic in the Peony Pavilion, and the .soul of it. Tang Xianzu, the writer of this Ming dynasty opera, advances "passion" to be a kind of reality. In this opera, "passion" is firstly a natural ardor, secondly, a social love. By affirming ardor and love, the Peony Pavilion is actually full of resisting to the "Li" in Chinese feudal society and pursuit of freedom and individuality. Just because the multiple meanings of the "passion" in the Peony Pavilion, it exceeds most of the former love operas and engraves a strong stroke in Chinese opera history.
