Kwok-kan Tam is currently Professor at the Department of English, Chinese University of Hong Kong. He worked at the East-West Center, Honolulu after he obtained his Ph.D. in English and comparative literature from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA, in 1984. His research interests are 20th-century Chinese-Western literary relationship, postcolonial English and literature, drama/theatre studies, and literary and cultural theories. His recent publications include The Politics of Subject Construction in Modern Chinese Literature (2000), Ibsen in China 1908 -1997: A Critical-Annotated Bibliography of Criticism, Translation and Peoformance( 2001 ), Soul of Chaos : Critical Perspectives on C, ao Xingfian ( ed. , 2001 ), Shakespeare Global/ Local (co-ed. , 2002) and English and Globalization (co-ed. , 2004). The following is an interview with Prof. Kwok-kan Tam by Dr. Su Hui, editor of Foreign Literature Studies, who was a visiting scholar at the Hong Kong Baptist University earlier this year. In this interview, Prof. Tam gives his views on comparative literature, and points out that literary criticism and cultural studies are closely related, but he also thinks that they remain distinctly different. While cultural theories provide insights into the relation between literature and culture, literary study must be able to shed light on literary elements, such as theme, characters, structure and language. According to him, comparative literature is a systemic study of world literature. Influence study, parallel study and issues study are some of the methods that can be used in cross- or trans-cultural studies. On Ibsen studies, Prof. Tam believes that scholars in China must follow very closely what their counterparts are doing in other countries, particularly in the West, so that they can respond to the current debates and issues that are of interest in the academe. He suggests that theatre specialists in China may try new styles in the staging of Ibsen's plays, which will give the audience fresh per- spectives. As a member of the Editorial Board of Foreign Literature Studies, Prof. Tam thinks that the journal has made tremendous achievements, and he suggests that it may publish more articles in English, especially on comparative literature.
