戏仿是后现代主义小说的一个主要特征。约翰.巴思的处女作《漂浮的歌剧》,在故事的主要线索、情节发展、主导思想和主人公的具体思辩等多个方面都对《哈姆雷特》进行了戏仿和颠覆。这种技巧的运用使得解读《漂浮的歌剧》变成了一个与《哈姆雷特》不断互相观照的过程,前者既是对后者的继承,又是对后者的疏离。认识到这一点是解读《飘浮的歌剧》的关键。
Parody constructs one of the primary features of postmodernist fiction. John Barth's The Floating Opera parodies Hamlet in more than one aspect, such as the major clue of the story, the plot development, the dominant philosophy, the protagonist's way of reasoning and the like. The employment of this technique turns the process of interpreting The Floating Opera into a continual contrasting with Hamlet, which is the crux to the understanding of this novel.
