With only ten years into the democratic project of post-Apartheid South Africa, we are beginning to see the first clear signs of new approaches to architectural designr This article Investigates some issues Of cuitural identity in contemporary South African architecture, especially with regards to the design of new publlc buildings. The author contends that most South Africans today wish to escape the repressive impositions of the Apartheid years. Most wish to reimagine their sense of personal and collective belonging, in ways that open democratic aspirations for the future, Architecture, practiced as a public art, obviously must'play its part in this process of subjective rediscovery. The article begins by developing some reflections on a cultural politics of subjective identification, set In relation to South Affica's long legacy of cotonial rule. From here the article coositiers three ways in which architectural practice can contribute to the formation of new cultural identities, namely, design envisaged as an open and democratic practice, the making of public space, and ideas of tectonic memory in design. Each theme is interpreted in relation to significant works of contemporary South African architecture.
