"Anatomy of a Monster":The Challenge of a New Art Museum in Graz

The new art museum of Graz,in Austria. known as ＂a rnendly alien＂, is a Fadieal building that challenges arch itectural norms in anumber of ways, In this article, the author has analysed iit singularity from four main design perspectives： the challenge to the histurical unban context of Graz which has been classified by UNESCO as a Wodd Heritage town and was nominated Cultural Capital of Europe for 2003; the challenge to museum design conventions; the technical challenge of its complex biomorphic geometry. and finally the experiential challenge that is offered to the visitors who, having been seduced by the building＇s surpnsing appearance, want to explore its secrels and decide to enter it.
