In the struggle for national independence, Islam and nationalism were two important banners that guided Indonesians and of which their representing groups were also the main leading powers. The two groups shared a same target and cooperated in striving for national independence. However, they failed to agree to leadership and notion of what types of country would be built. In the end, nationalism kept the weather and established the nation on the basis of Pancasila. The text mainly discusses the relationship of Islam and nationalism, focuses on their debate and its consequences during the period of independence and analyzes their roots.
