Aim: To explore the relationship between changes of 5 hydroxytryptamine (5 HT) and dopamine (DA) in the brain microvessels and traumatic brain edema at the acute stage of the rat brain injury. Methods: Both 5 HT and DA levels in the brain microvessels at the acute stage of the rat brain injury were measured by high performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detector. Results: The levels of 5 HT and DA in the brain microvessels increased apparently at 0.5h, and still higher than control value at 6h after brain injury ( P <0.01). The brain water content increased remarkably in the same time. Conclusion: The increases of 5 HT and DA in the brain microvessels might be one of the important factors for the production and the development of traumatic brain edema following brain injury.
