Abstract It is proved that the symmetrical form of two 9-parameter elements, proposed by Bu Xiao-ming in [1], is identical with an unconventional element named VZ1 in [2]. It is also shown that the incomplete cubic polynomial space of the element has dimension 8 instead 9 as claimed in [1]. Therefore, the finite element approximation of this space cannot compete with other 9-parameter elements as demonstrated by numerical experiments in [2].
