小山酷爱山水,一生游历甚丰。或是翛然远游,或是择隐婆娑;或是宦游奔走,亦能兴发山水情志,从而“江山好处追游遍”。发为歌咏,留下许多游观、纪行、栖迟于佳山胜水的山水散曲。这些作品充分展示了他的游观视野和审美视野下的山水之美,艺术性强,极大地丰富了中国古代山水文学的宝库。
