The author first introduced the research background of defensive medicine （DM） at home and abroad, then pointed out the objective necessities of DM＇s existence under current social environment in China. Later, the significance of studying DM was analyzed and the research methods of studying DM were put forward. A primary criterion of determining DM was advanced through the Delphi technique by the author. Finally, the author gave out the specific idea of how to develop researches on DM.
