In this paper, the authors discuss the possibility of improving the performance of text retrieval systems with part of speech tagging, which was formly studied in the literature of Natural Language Processing (NLP). Based on the probability theory, it′s proved that under certain conditions, part of speech tags may increase the retrieval system′s efficiency which is represented by Average Search Length (ASL) here. Further considerations are made for applying part of speech tagging process on real retrieval systems.
